Whatamp#039s The Best And Most Efficient Way To DogTrain
Jul 16th, 2010 by Russ

There are many different styles of dog training, and finding the one that works best for you is important for creating a dog that is a talented, loyal and faithful member of the family.  All successful methods of dog training work to reinforce the relationship between dog and handler, and the foundation of any successful training program is getting the respect of the dog.  Fortunately, dogs are wired by nature to seek out leaders, and to follow the direction of those leaders.

Both leash/collar training and reward training have been around for a very long time, and they have proven their effectiveness over time.  The type of training that works best will vary from dog to dog, and from breed to breed.  It is important to remember that each breed of dog has its own unique qualities, reinforced by hundreds of years of selective breeding.

The leash and training collar is the most basic piece of equipment used in training a dog.  Using the lead and training collar properly is vital to successful dog training.  The training collar is designed to apply a specific amount of pressure each time the leash is tightened.  The amount of pressure put on the leash controls the amount of pressure placed on the training collar, and the pressure can be adjusted according to how the dog responds.

Of course personalities of individual dogs vary quite a bit, even within established breeds.  You, as the owner of the dog, know better than anyone which style of dog training will work best, so it is important to work with the trainer you choose to achieve your goal of a willing, obedient and friendly dog.

Leash and collar training is the best way to accomplish many types of dog training, particularly in situations where the dog must have a high level of reliability.  For instance, dogs that have an important job to do, such as rescue dogs, police dogs and guard dogs, generally benefit from leash and collar training.

The first part of training with collar and leash, of course, is to purchase a quality, well made training collar that will fit your dog properly.  There are many types of training collars and leashes on the market.  The most important thing is to choose one that is sturdy and well made.  The last thing you want to do is chase your dog down after he has broken his collar.

The length of the collar should be approximately two inches longer than the circumference of the dog’s neck.  It is important to accurately measure the dog’s neck using a measuring tape.  In order to get an accurate measurement, you must make sure that the tape is not tight around the dog’s neck.

In a collar and leash based dog training program, first the dog is taught a particular behavior, generally with the leash.  After the dog has demonstrated that it understands the command, the leash is then used to correct the dog if it disobeys, or when it makes a mistake.  The leash is the main form of controlling and communicating with the dog in leash and collar training.

When using leash and collar training, the dog must be trained to trust the handler and accept his or her directions without question.  In order for the dog to be fully trained, the handler must demonstrate the ability to place the dog into a posture or position he or she does not want to take.  This does not mean using force, but it does generally require some level of physical manipulation.  This manipulation is most easily and safely done using the main tool of leash and collar training – the leash.

The well trained dog is one who will walk at his owner’s side on a loose lead, neither dropping behind nor charging ahead.

The well trained dog will also vary his pace to meet that of his handler.  Under no circumstances should the handler be forced to change his or her pace to match that of the dog.

If the dog does begin to charge ahead, it is important to correct the dog promptly by giving a quick tug on the leash.  This will give the dog a good reminder that he needs to change his pace.  It is important to quickly relieve the pressure as soon as the dog responds.  The training collar is designed to relieve pressure as soon as the leash is loosened.

Most dogs will immediately respond to corrections by a good, properly used training collar.  If the dog does not respond as directed, it may be necessary to apply greater pressure.  This can be especially true of large dogs or those who have preexisting behavior or control problems.  If you are still unable to get a response from your dog, it is possible that you are using a training collar that is not large enough for your dog.  If you think this may be the case, be sure to ask for expert advice before proceeding.

U.S. Training Was Key to Intifada’s Success?

RAMALLAH — American-run programs that train Fatah militias were instrumental in the “success” of the Palestinian intifada that began in 2000, a senior Fatah militant told The New York Sun.

“I do not think that the operations of the Palestinian resistance would have been so successful and would have killed more than one thousand Israelis since 2000 and defeated the Israelis in Gaza without these [American] trainings,” a senior officer of President Abbas’s Force 17 Presidential Guard unit, Abu Yousuf, said.

See link – http://www.nysun.com/article/60989

Question – What are your thoughts ?

Answer
This is colossally stupid. Maybe we should offer training to al-Qaida, too.

To continue from the article:

This weekend diplomatic security officials announced that the State Department will begin training Force 17 again this year in an effort to bolster Mr. Abbas against Hamas, which took over the Gaza Strip in June when the terror group easily defeated American-backed Fatah forces in the territory.

Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on me.

Training Directory – Connecting You To The Best Trainers
Jul 14th, 2010 by Russ

Organizations are facing great pressure to facilitate and encourage whole-person development and fulfillment in order to achieve better results. A strong capability to plan and manage skills training, the acquisition of knowledge, and the development of motivation and attitude, largely determines how well people perform in their jobs.

It is crucial that the employees possess the knowledge, skills and competencies required for optimum performance. Recognizing the training, development and learning needs necessary to equip staff with the capabilities required to contribute to business success and progress their careers is therefore the key to success across all domains. There are some websites that provide access to the training industry’s premier directory of Training Providers. Individuals or businesses subscribing to these sites can find:

The best trainers locally, nationally or internationally
The best executive coaches, life coaches and online coaches to guide people to success
Training videos, training materials, free training software, Assessment instruments, Guides/Manuals for training managers
Directory of top e-learning companies, web-based training programs and more

In case, a company is not sure of what they are looking for, they can submit a Request for Quotation (RFQ) that would detail what they exactly need. The RFQ process allows one to choose as many or as few providers as they want to receive a quote from. It is also possible to exclude certain ones that they would not want to consider under any circumstance. This enables them to connect to the right trainers in that particular area of expertise.

Browsing the World Wide Web for finding good Training Companies and Development Quotes is actually very time consuming, regardless of how good the searcher is, or how sophisticated the search engine. A website offering access to the directory of training providers and supplies makes most of these searches unnecessary. By having a large range of pre-selected categories, in a matter of seconds users can find the subject of their issue at hand and find the right person or company that can provide a solution to their particular problem.

A competent workforce underpins the success of any organization. Getting the right skills in place cuts waste and boosts profitability. So, subscribe to the agile training resource and solutions, and boost your business by improving the skills of your individual staff members!

Has anyone had success with Petco and/or any other dog training classes?

Hello! I am currently seeking a trainer for my psycho daschund mix. I have two other dogs that I took to Petsmart to be trained and it worked out great, but the Petsmart by my new house has given me grief before (let’s just say I will never go back there!), so I have turned to Petco. I am willing to do private lessons with a small company or with a person who is certified on their own. Has anyone had success with Petco or any other trainer(s)? I live in Northern Massachusetts (and close to the So. NH border), so anywhere near where I live would be great. Thanks for the input!

Answer
I have a friend who had a good experience with one of the Pet store training’s (I can’t remember which one off the top of my head). It didn’t work out for my German Shepherd rescue though, and I needed to get him in to see an experienced GSD trainer, and the experience has been a LIFE SAVER!

I live in PA so the trainers name may not help, but he may know someone in your area that would be good–he deals with “special” cases who either have aggression or past abuse issues (and helps them get over their problems).

His name is John Jones and the following is his website: www.JohnJonesCanineTraining.com

He has been a lifesaver, so even giving him a call with questions could help!

Good luck!

Tips for Training Your New Best Friend
Jun 28th, 2010 by Russ

You have picked out the perfect dog to bring home to your family, just to find out that perfect dog may be your worst nightmare! How did that happen? The answer is your cute little angel was never taught how to behave in certain situations.

You would not leave your toddler alone in the living room to have free access to the remote controls, DVDs and snacks. You should not leave your puppy, either. If you do, you will likely come into a huge mess where your puppy had a blast while you were gone. The thing is that if you did not try to train your dog on how to behave, than this is your own fault! But sadly, it is the dog that is blamed and punished. How do you expect your dog to know what to do when put in certain situations?

You have brought your puppy or dog into your home to love and nurture, not to yell at and scold all of the time. This causes frustration for you and your puppy.

Teach one thing at a time. Your dog has a single track mind.

Do not demand immediate action. Give your dog a moment to carry out your command.

Be decisive and know exactly what you want from your dog.

Always be considerate of you dog. If your puppy is tired, do not expect him to get up and go through a training period. It is not a very nice thing to do, and your dog will likely be too tired to comprehend what you are trying to teach him.

A bond should be developed between you and your dog. You will be able to train your dog more effectively if your dog respects you as his leader. And, he will want to please you much more.
Be clear when you say your commands, and the commands should be the same each time in the same voice and manner. If you try to change these things, your dog will only get confused and you will only get frustrated.

Patience is the key to successfully training your dog. With patience, you will be able to accept the fact that your puppy is just that, a puppy. He is not a human, and therefore you will need even more patience to get you and your puppy through this trying period.

With all of the ways to train your dog, it is important not to fall into the trap of using command techniques that are very ineffective and down right cruel. The sad thing is that people believe what they read much of the time. There are choke collars, spike collars and electric collars available that many people are led to believe are the only way to get your dog to behave. This is just plain cruel and can literally affect the health of your dog.

Take some time to get to know the characteristics of your dog before you bring him home. For example, if you are expecting a dog that will lounge around, you would not want to bring home an energetic Puggle, or if you want a dog that will run around and play, you would not want to bring home a dog known for being lazy! This could lead to frustration, and therefore you and your dog would not be very happy. Your dog deserves to live in a happy and healthy home where he is loved and maybe even a little spoiled! How about getting him a cozy dog bed or a jacket for those cold, rainy days? Make him feel at home and love being with you and you with him.

How essential is the “training period” to success with an invisible dog fence?

We recently brought home a German Shepherd/Husky mix (male), approximately 3 months old. I purchased one of those “invisible” fences; the type that does not require a wire to be buried in your yard. It utilizes a wireless transmitter that broadcasts a 180′ diameter circular “pet area”. When the dog steps beyond the edge ot the “pet area”, the collar “zaps” him.

The manual that came with it talks about a training period of about 2 weeks for the system to be effective. How necessary is this? Are there different ways to handle this that won’t take two weeks?
The reason the “2 weeks” things will be difficult, is that I’m at work during all hours of daylight, and my wife is disabled and cannot walk the dog. So the only training time I will have is on weekends. According to my fingers, that equates to about 7 weeks.

Answer
I have a Golden Retriever. I set mine up and put out the flags, the first time I took my dog out to walk around, he got shocked and turned around, trotted back to the house, looking over his shoulder giving me a dirty look….I left the flags up for a week and there have been no problems since. As soon as he hears the familiar warning beep he turns tail so he never gets shocked. I think he learned that first time. He knows where the beeps starts so he doesn’t go close to the boundaries. So it didn’t take 2 weeks, it took 2 minutes.

3 Tips On Buying The Best Powered Riding Toys For Your Child
May 7th, 2010 by Russ

Taking steps to purchase the right kind of powered riding toys for your child can provide them with hours of fun. You want to be careful though that you don’t just go out and purchase the first one that catches your eye. Instead there are numerous factors that you must take into consideration beforehand that will help to ensure that you make a more informed decision as to which type of toy to consider. Taking your time and doing some research will also ensure that you find one that is not only fun but is also affordable for your budget.

Powered riding toys come in a huge amount of varieties so how do you figure out what kinds of things to consider when it comes to looking for and purchasing this kind of ride on toys? These are a few of the most important things to consider:

1. The first thing that needs to be considered is the age of the child that will be using the toy. Keep in mind that you need ride on toys that they can operate easily so you don’t want a ride where the height won’t allow them to place their feet squarely on the ground so that they remain stable at all times. Plus of course you don’t want a toy that weighs too much otherwise they will find it very difficult to control when it is moving.

2. The next thing you need to take into consideration is how long the battery in the powered riding toys you are considering purchasing are rated to last. If you’re looking to purchase this kind of toy choose one that enables you to recharge the batteries. Unfortunately some of the cheaper models you will find may allow you to recharge them a few times but will at some point in the future need replacing. Also look for toys that can be recharged quickly so your kids can back on them in a short amount of time.

3. Finally, look at the maximum speed the powered riding toys you are considering purchasing can travel. Generally you will find that the majority of them travel at no more than 6 miles per hour (or 10 km per hour). This is generally a very safe speed but make sure that it’s a speed that you yourself are comfortable with.

Powered riding toys like the Power Wheels Toys and the Pink Power Wheels are one of the most popular children’s ride on toys and they’re a very fun toy to shop for. By doing a little bit of research your children will have a toy that they’ll love for years to come.
