Two trains with 154Hz horns approach one another. The slower of the two trains has a speed of 23 m?

Two trains with 154Hz horns approach one another. The slower of the two trains has a speed of 23m/s

What is the speed of the fast train if an observer standing near the tracks between the trains hears a beat frequency of 4.4Hz?

Answer
As fast as a cat with 9 legs.
I’d say about 14*10^2 m/s base on my nonexistent calculations.

How do subways accelerate so fast compared to other trains, even through they’re still really heavy?

Subway trains used as a bus/taxi/car alternative to get around in new york, los angelos etc. I ride them in my city Washington dc, and I always wondered how they get off from the start so fast. I ride amtrak trains on vacations, and I always realized they take off really really slowly, but they always go really fast at the top speed. Subway trains don’t go very fast so how do they do this?

Answer
Same way some cars accelerate faster than others, power to weight ratio

nothing complicated about it.

Toddler friendly trains that don’t revolve around the Thomas and friends franchise?

I am having trouble finding a cool train set for my 2 year old that doesn’t have those ridiculous faces on it. My son doesn’t care for the Thomas stuff either, but the only other train sets I am finding are for much older kids. Besides that, Thomas trains are so expensive. Any ideas?

Answer
The Brio ones are great. The best thing about them is that they have small sets for add-ons, so they’ll grow with your child and he’ll get years of play out of them. Playmobile is also a great brand. Again, they have so many sets, your child will get years of play out of them. I’ve seen the Circo, Target set, and they’re like an inexpensive Brio knock-off. They’re a good value. Imaginarium are good too. I’d personally avoid the plastic sets without the option to add-on, because your son might use them for a year or so, but they don’t grow with him. Trains are fun for years.

Another good option is the Lego Duplo train set. Duplos are the larger preschool blocks that made by Lego. You can add them to more duplos sets your son plays with for the next few years. Here is a link:

What is the best book or starter kit for a beginner with Model Trains?

One of my best friends mentioned years ago that his dad did model trains and had a big model train table before his dad passed away. He mentioned that he wanted to make something similar to it when he gets older, in part because it’s one of the few memories he has of his father. I’ve only recently remembered this conversation and I thought a starter kit or an informative book for beginners might be good for him as a birthday or Christmas present. Does anyone know anything about this hobby that might be able to make some good suggestions?

Answer
Great Idea… the books I’d suggest come from Kalambach Publishing (they print Model Railroading Magazine):

They have a nice SERIES of book that cover the basics, and also that deal with “realistic” operations and design of the layout. Here is a link to get you started: http://kalmbachcatalog.stores.yahoo.net/model-railroading-books-model-railroading-for-beginners.html

ONE I truly suggest is “Realistic Operations”: http://kalmbachcatalog.stores.yahoo.net/12231.html
