Manager’s ECM Training Checklist Six Ways to Ensure Success

People are the most valuable asset any organization owns. Yet training them adequately is often viewed as a dispensable expense, especially when the economy is soft and money is tight. Since technical knowledge can be gained through a process of self discovery, monies that might be used for training in a thriving economy may be axed when times are tough. Too often, managers fail to recognize the competitive edge that appropriate and timely training can provide. Solid training results in lower turnover that increases customer satisfaction and ultimately results in higher profitability. Simply stated, a commitment to training is often a major predictor of an organization’s success.

Managers who approach training with the attitude that employees should educate themselves encourage self reliance, but there is a high cost—especially in a competitive marketplace. Everyday job demands typically allow limited time for exploration. This results in missed opportunities to increase performance, service, revenue, and profits. Often, by the time staff members have acquired the skills needed for optimal job performance, they have missed the chance to help the company get ahead.

Since technology improves rapidly, staying abreast of change is imperative. Although enterprise content management (ECM) technology has matured, new possibilities allow companies to drive data stored in multiple legacy systems, databases, and software applications across their enterprises more efficiently than ever. For employees to maximize their individual and collective worth, they must constantly update their skills. New technologies, software releases, and solutions to business challenges only deliver their full potential when end users take advantage of efficiency gains before their competitors.

Checklist for Success

As you consider ECM training for your employees, there are six guiding principles to bear in mind. This checklist will help you to evaluate your ECM vendor’s training program to ensure it matches your requirements and expectations, and delivers the results you need to succeed.

1. Understand the difference between education and training

Training and education are often used interchangeably to describe programs that enable meaningful learning, but their purposes differ. Educational programs are designed to transfer knowledge from the teacher to the student, helping students to grow professionally over a period of time. In contrast, training programs are designed to transfer knowledge and skills quickly to improve performance of a specific job or task.

Consider a tightrope walker. Educating a new walker about the risks involved and providing tips and tools for successful walking do not provide the skills a person needs to walk from one end to the other. The learner needs to have the right tools in his hands, walk the rope at a low height in a protected environment, and be allowed to fail repeatedly before he can succeed.

• a person must perform a specific task to complete a job, but doesn’t know how;

• a person could improve processing speed or performance through additional training;

Ask yourself:

___ is my goal to give employees immediate knowledge and skills to help them perform better? Will understanding the features and functions of the ECM software help them work faster, smarter, and better? If so, they will benefit from ECM training.

___ is my goal to impart knowledge to help users develop strategies for success? If so, you may need other educational programs rather than ECM training.

2. Establish training goals

As with any improvement plan, success can only be reached when goals are clearly communicated. What do you expect beyond your staff learning product features and functionality?

Should the training result in:

___ improved productivity?

___ reduced expenditures as a result of improved performance?

___ improved employee morale, either for the worker, his/her peers, or both?

___ increased customer satisfaction?

___ increased value or ROI from your company’s technology investment?

Setting expectations for your company, end users, and vendors helps everyone stay on target.

Know the capabilities of your staff, too. Training can be an expensive and pointless proposition for underperforming employees who already know how to perform a task properly, but simply aren’t meeting expectations.

3. Match proposed training benefits with expectations

End user training has advantages for your employees as well as your company. It allows your workers to perfect their skills, raises their esteem, and it improves their working environment. Expect a solid ECM training program to:

___ shorten the learning curve so staff can reach optimal productivity quickly.

___ lessen end user frustration.

___ increase workers’ satisfaction and positive self esteem.

___ reduce employee turnover.

Productive workers are valued employees. Valued employees often are loyal team members. Customers appreciate long-term employees who provide accurate answers and quick service. Successful training helps to produce effective, loyal workers who will have a positive impact on your company’s service reputation and its bottom line.

Make sure the training each person needs matches the program offered. Students should be challenged, but not overwhelmed. They must believe success is within their reach.

4. Choose the right environment for learning

Every company has preferred learning environments, and employee learning styles differ. Depending on the type of training required, you may prefer a certain time, place, and length of instruction, or you may discover customized training is best for your team. As you evaluate ECM vendors and their training programs, consider whether they offer:

___ onsite training (at your company headquarters or a satellite location; typically requires a test environment and students who can connect to the application via a remote desktop).

___ offsite training (at the vendor’s headquarters).

___ web-based training (make sure it’s interactive / hands-on).

___ customized training to meet your company’s unique needs.

___ customized documentation that supports customized instruction.

___ a class size that supports interactive learning (includes web training).

___ written, up-to-date materials to support the training, including hands-on activities that promote understanding as well as PowerPoints and reference materials you can access afterwards.

___ staff who can answer questions during the training course, while interest and attention are at their peak.

Many managers view web training as the most cost-effective option, especially if it only requires several hours of staff time per day. However, to ensure your staff gets the same value from web-based instruction as in-person training, it’s important to set clear expectations.

Make sure:

___ IT requirements for web training courses are communicated and tested prior to training so staff time is not wasted.

___ the room is set up for interactive discussion if possible, including a speaker phone and projector.

___ training takes place in a meeting or training room rather than at employees’ desks (too many distractions).

___ employees understand you support the training and expect 100% attention to the coursework from start to finish. Checking emails, attending meetings, and other interruptions should be disallowed during web instruction.

5. Choose the right trainer

You may or may not be able to choose your trainer, depending whether your vendor offers set courses for which you must register, has different trainers for each product, or lets you request customized training. Regardless, you should ensure the training team is:

___ knowledgeable (product certification is vital);

___ experienced (don’t pay for your staff to be guinea pigs);

___ able to communicate best practices for the areas in which staff will be trained;

___ adaptable to participants’ needs, with prior students who are strong references; and

___ flexible in terms of class style and willing to customize classes to your needs.

6. Measure the impact

High-quality training should always result in measurable job improvement, confident staff, and successful IT projects. If your vendor is committed to ensuring your success, the company will value candid feedback so they can continue to raise the bar on their instructional quality. As you scrutinize the programs your vendor offers, ask if you will have the opportunity to rate the trainer, materials, and overall success of the training class anonymously. If opportunities for objective feedback don’t exist, it may be an indicator of half-hearted commitment to quality control, which any ECM company must provide if its products and services are to meet business needs.

Remember: learning is not an end process

Change is the only constant in the IT world. It’s important to remember training is not a one-time event if you want to continually improve your company’s business performance. Learning never stops; quality instruction ensures learning is timely and meaningful to the task at hand.

American business writer Thomas J. Peters, author of the best-selling book In Search of Excellence, summed up the value of investing in training by stating, “Train everyone lavishly; you can’t overspend on training.” Nowhere is this truer than helping your staff to succeed with your ECM system. Does anyone have a success/failure story post Graphic Design school?

I dropped out of Architecture school this past Fall and I have been considering applying to a Graphic Design program. My Dad was a graphic designer for a TV station -hated his job and made a poor salary, so I’ve had a stigma against the field until recently. If anyone has a story of success or failure post Graphic Design training, I’d love to hear it. Thanks!

I graduated about 2 years ago with a degree in Graphic Design and I have yet to find a full-time job. I went to college with many like me, who have yet to find a job or have given up on Graphic Design and end up taking a job doing something else because we all need to pay the bills somehow.

I started looking for jobs after graduating and it is tough! There are a lot of Designers out there looking for work so competition can be stiff. You portfolio has to be pretty good to even get an interview. Most design jobs these days are in Web so that definitely doesn’t help Graphic Designers who aren’t trained in Flash or web coding.

I’ve been trying to gain experience in the field more than anything because that is a huge factor for many employers. So, I’ve done an internship for a publication company, taken on various freelance projects, and now I work part-time at a creative and web development company as a Graphic Designer. I still look for jobs all the time though because part-time isn’t really cutting it.

If you are in it mainly for the money then you will not like this field, at least in the beginning. The higher paying positions are for Senior Designers, Project Managers or Art Directors- people with years of experience and in a managing role. It isn’t a glamorous job and the pay starting out kind of sucks. It may take years or just plain luck to make a decent salary in this field.

Cats are greatly popular, and among the top favorites to have as pets. They are cute, fun, and greatly independent, making them easy to have around. However, if you don’t know how to train them, your cute kitty, can turn into a great pain.

People assume because cats are independent and have a stubborn streak that they are hard to train, but if you know the proper way to train them it’s rather easy. It will take a little time, because like we mentioned before they are stubborn, however you can use that stubborn streak to your advantage.

These are a few cat training tips to ensure a successful training program:

1. Don’t give up

Two seconds into starting to train your cat, you might realize that’s not a piece of cake, but it’s not rocket science either. If you have trained another animal before, you have probably noticed that it’s not easy, but it’s not difficult once you look back on it. With training a cat, you have to stay focused and willing. Though it might take a little more effort, you can train your cat.

2. Know your cat

In order to train your cat, you have to know what his/her personality is like. No two cats are the same, so if you know how your cat acts, it will make training much easier for you. You need to learn what your cat likes and doesn’t like and go from there.

3. Know when to train your cat

You need to know when it’s OK to train your cat. First, don’t wake them from a catnap to train them. They’re just like a sleeping baby. If you wake them up when they aren’t ready to be woken up and are still tired, you’re going to have a cranky kitty on your hands.

You’re going to get frustrated because your cat is frustrated. It won’t want to listen to you, when all they want to do is nap. Plus, you need to keep training sessions short. You don’t want your cat to get overwhelmed or worse bored. This will be counter productive, and leave you again frustrated.

4. Use Positive Reinforcement

This is the most crucial part of your cat’s training program. When your cat does the desired behavior you reward them with praise or a treat. Don’t reward them out of the blue, because they will associate rewards with doing absolutely nothing. Also, remember not to punish them. If they do something wrong, don’t react at all! This is important, you don’t want them to associate what they did wrong with any attention what so ever.

5. Small steps

Though this might cause the training process to take a little longer, you have to take things slowly. You’re teaching a new cat, new tricks, so it will take time. If you want your cat to learn something, you can’t expect him/her to know how to do it that first day.

For example, if you want to train your cat to use the toilet (yes, people do it these days), then it is best for you to gradually move the cat’s litter box closer and closer to the bathroom that you want him/her to use. I’ve tried it. His vocalizations are based on the classical way of teaching singing, with a few helpful tips on how to do them properly.My voice did improve after a few weeks of singing– my middle range is stronger, and my low range did improve. I didn’t get an octave increase though, unless you count my newly-developed low range as an increase. Anyway I started going to a real live teacher but I still use his warm-up exercises for when I need to warm my voice up quickly. I think it’s good enough to start with and if you want singing as a hobby.But if you really want to improve then it’s better to have an actual teacher listening to you and telling you how to do it and if you’re doing it correctly.

Oh, the warm-ups are handy to bring around- just transfer them to your iPod and, voila! You can warm-up anywhere.

Toilet Training Hamster Success?

I successfully managed to (pee only) toilet-train my hamster, and wanted to share my experience.

My hamster is 6 weeks old, I just bought her a week ago. I bought one of those “hamster toilets” in the pet store not knowing if it would work or not. I read that it is really hard to do.

I set up the toilet in a corner of the cage w/ toilet gravel. My hamster would play in it in the beginning. When she peed anywhere else in or out of the cage, I would take a small corner of toilet paper, soak up all the urine, and put it in the hamster toilet. I did this for one week straight. If I noticed she peed anywhere else in the cage (ex. tube), I’d wash it with soap right away to get rid of the urine smell so she’d know that’s not her toilet.

I saw her do this twice today: wake up from nap, walk into toilet, squat, and walk out. I inspected the toilet and noticed the gravel was all wet. I sniffed to check & yep, pee!

Just be patient. I was very lucky.

5 Simple Ways to Successfully Train Your Puppy. Your ThreeMonthOld Puppy is Ready For Training

In the past, dogs under 6 months old were not put into training classes. There were even trainers who believed that a puppy who was 12 months old was just the right age to begin training. Today‘s popular belief is that the dog’s first few months are the best and most important time to start training. The following are some reasons to begin training early.

? Puppies wake up every day ready to learn whatever you will teach them.

? Puppies have no opinion of certain situations and actions. Because of this, they are able to learn things rather quickly.

? They will pick up on and learn what is good and bad and what earns them praise, whether we try to teach them or not.

? Puppies can be trained into charming and obedient pets, primarily because they have no bad habits for the trainer to overcome.

While there are many ways that you can train your dog, I always prefer the kindest method. The following is a quick summary of training tips for puppies.

1) Opportunity Training – Without the puppy ever understanding that it is a “training session”, you begin to train him.

2) Attention Training – Before I give a new command, I wait until the puppy is actually doing what I am going to command him to do. I then introduce him to the “Watch” command as he is waiting to receive his reward. Because puppies have a very short attention span, you must reward him immediately.

3) The Sit – Get the attention of your puppy by allowing him to sniff the treat that you are holding as you kneel. Raise your hand slightly higher than your puppy’s head. Since it will be simpler for the puppy to see the tidbit while sitting, he will do so. After the pup is sitting, praise him and give him the sit command. Do this only after the puppy is performing the correct behavior. This sequence may need to be repeated 9 or 10 times.

4) The Down – Start this command the same was as you began the ‘sit’ command. At this point, you should hide the food from your puppy by covering it with your open hand (palm down). He will try different things in order to get the treat. He may not see it, but he will still smell the food. Your puppy will then likely try to move your hand away from the food by nudging it with his nose. After this, the puppy will see that by lying down his task will be made easier. As soon as your puppy lies down, while he is in this position, command him ‘down’, and give him praise and a reward for his good behavior.

5) The Recall – The recall command is one of the most important that a puppy can learn. It is important for his safety and for his behavior around others. While the dog is ready to learn commands such as sit, and down, he can also learn the recall command. Have another person kneel on the ground and hold on to the dog. Kneel or sit on the floor a yard or two away from your dog. To get the puppy’s attention, you can put both of your hands out in front of you. Command your dog to ‘come’. Before your helper releases the dog, make sure that you have the full attention of the puppy. When your puppy is running, use lots of excitement while commanding him again to “Come”. Immediately give him his reward upon arrival. Only teach your puppy one command at a time. Do not try to make him lay down, sit, or stop at the same time. Repeat the same exercise as many times as needed until the puppy understands it.

It is important to know that the youngest of puppies can learn a lot very fast. Puppies can learn quite quickly with the aid of proper skill and a positive attitude. The real benefit to training it that it helps to build a dogs confidence in it’s owner and allows it to bond to that person. Training exercises should be fun. The dog should feel playful and relaxed while learning. If it is fun for the puppy, he or she will WANT to learn more things.

What could be going on with my toddlers potty training success?

My son turned three March 27, and for several months I have been potty training him we started off with him stark naked, then moved to training underwear, then to pullups. He did great at first but now for no apparent reason has begun to soil himself. I feel like breaking in tears as he won’t communicate with me what he wants. Some children communicate that they want to wear their pullups, some underwear he don’t communicate with me at all. It seems like he doesn’t pee/poop only when he gets to run around naked but when he is clothed he doesn’t care if he goes in his underwear or pullups. I can tell he is frustrated with potty training right now, and wonder if I am at fault like maybe I pushed him too hard. What could be going on? Should I back off and let him go it alone or keep encouraging (which leads to a power struggle)?

I know it’s frustrating. My daughter just turned 3 and is just now potty trained during the day but still wears a pull up over night. We were one step forward, two steps back for well over a year with the potty training.
What I did, and our pediatrician agreed with me on this philosophy, was to just let her go at her own rate. I really believe that if you push too hard you will just make it worse. Mine did the exact same thing yours is doing and I promise that eventually he will decide that peeing and pooping in his pants is something he does not want to do. Just don’t make a big deal of it yourself. Each day let him make a decision about what he wants to wear (pull up or underwear). If he doesn’t tell you, get a piece of posterboard or construction paper and glue pictures of underwear and pull ups and ask him to choose or lay each out and ask him to make the decision. acomplia on obesity Then it’s all his idea. When he does use the potty, praise him (you can do treats if you want but I don’t like to get that sort of thing started). Just act like it doesn’t bother you one way or another but do praise for the behavior you want to see. It will work itself out in time.

By the way, since he’s not communicating with you on the underwear vs. pull up issue I wonder if he has problems with communicating with you in general. If that’s the case, mention those concerns to your pediatrician. Mine is in speech therapy because of her verbal delays and even though it was hard to initiate that step, I’m really glad we got her some additional help because her language skills have grown by leaps and bounds since we have and her frustration level (and mine) has decreased drastically. If that’s not the case then just ignore this part. :)
